Fine artist Katherine Hyunkyung Oh has been drawing her solitary women with intricate hair since 2007 after discovering a painting by Hyewon, an 18th century Korean painter from the Joseon-period. She instantly became enchanted by the enormous braided mass adorning the Korean woman’s delicate head. Since then, she has become obsessed with this wig called “gache (가체)” and it has become an icon in her work.
She grew up in Maryland, studied art in New York, moved to sunny San Diego County, lived in Seoul, tried out Australia, and finally returned to southern California with her husband, Shannon. They have two Boston Terrier Pugs, Bruce and Juno.
